Elon Musk presented yet another contentious ultimatum to federal employees on Saturday afternoon, directing them to either report their work achievements through email or resign from their positions.
Musk, a billionaire and advisor to President Trump, as well as the de facto head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) established by the Trump administration, initially shared this email directive on X, previously known as Twitter, at 2:46 p.m. ET on Saturday.
In alignment with President @realDonaldTrump’s directives, all federal employees will soon receive an email inquiring about their accomplishments from the previous week, as stated in the post. "Noncompliance in responding will be interpreted as a resignation."
The email, which was examined by USA TODAY, was directed to the employee with the subject line "What did you do last week?" Sent late on Saturday afternoon, it requests that employees "Please respond to this email with approximately five bullet points detailing your accomplishments from the previous week and copy your manager."
"Please refrain from including any classified information, links, or attachments. The deadline for responses is this Monday at 11:59 PM EST," the email further stated. It seemed to pertain to the week commencing February 16, which consisted of four working days due to Presidents Day, a federal holiday.
The communication was distributed to staff members at various agencies, such as the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, as reported by Reuters.
In contrast to Musk's post on X, the email did not indicate any termination or disciplinary measures for employees who do not respond in a timely manner. It remains uncertain what legal justification, if any, Musk might possess for implementing the proposed dismissals.
